Retinol Myth #1- It's Not An Exfoliant

Retinol Myths
Retinol Is Not An Exfoliant

Retinol, the shining star of the skincare galaxy, is renowned for battling skin enemies like acne, wrinkles, and dark spots. Plus, its prowess in amping up skin texture and fueling collagen production has turned it into a fan favorite.

But let's address the elephant in the room: Does retinol act as an exfoliant? You might think so, considering its reputation for increasing cellular turnover. However, it's important to remember that retinol is officially classified as an antioxidant. That said, its behavior does bear a striking resemblance to that of an exfoliant.

This skin sensation is essentially a vitamin A derivative and an antioxidant. The common misconception of retinol as an exfoliant stems from the peeling and redness that often occur after its application. However, retinol isn't a true exfoliant. Instead, it performs a job quite similar. It revives our skin cells, defends our collagen from free radicals, and stokes the creation of new collagen and elastin. Consequently, it plumps the underlying skin, which leads to a reduction in fine lines, wrinkles, and pores.

Retinol earns the title of a "pseudo-exfoliant" due to the way it mimics the actions of a genuine exfoliating ingredient. Retinol inspires your skin to regenerate more quickly and create healthier skin cells, while a proper exfoliant actually strips your skin of dead skin cells. Therefore, while retinol does manage the shedding of dead skin cells, it doesn't actively dissolve the bond between them. It might yield a similar result, but technically, retinol isn't an exfoliant. They employ different strategies to liberate skin cells.

Exfoliants are products or treatments that scrape off dead skin cell buildup, thereby aiding the skin's natural "shedding" process. They come in three types: chemical, physical, and enzymatic. Chemical exfoliants encompass alpha-hydroxy and beta-hydroxy acids, including the popular glycolic, lactic, and salicylic acids. Enzyme exfoliants usually come as masks or peels, while physical exfoliants mechanically discard dead skin cells.

Exfoliating is a critical part of a healthy skincare routine as it supercharges your skin's natural process of getting rid of dead skin cells, a process that decelerates with time. This sluggishness allows the dead cells to hang around longer, highlighting lines and making your skin look dull. Therefore, a good exfoliation ensures the dead layer is removed, unveiling a vibrant, rejuvenated glow.

Retinol packs a punch with numerous benefits that make it deserving of a spot in your skincare regimen. If you're a retinol rookie, brace yourself for potential irritation, a process known as "retinization". As retinol speeds up cell turnover, it can cause dryness and irritation. As a preventative measure, it's suggested to ease into retinol application, starting with the lowest strength just once or twice a week. If all goes well after a month, you can ramp it up to three times a week. Nonetheless, keep a watchful eye on your skin's reaction, as retinol is a strong contender and this might be all your skin can handle.

Your skincare routine can happily accommodate both an exfoliant and retinol. The smart way to use these two active ingredients is to apply them at different times or on alternating days to avoid skin irritation.
